Concord Hymn | Ralph Waldo Emerson
| | Sung at the Completion of the Battle Monument, April 19, 1836 |
| | BY the rude bridge that arched the flood, | | | Their flag to April's breeze unfurled, | | | Here once the embattled farmers stood, | | | And fired the shot heard round the world. | | | | | The foe long since in silence slept; | 5 | | Alike the conqueror silent sleeps; | | | And Time the ruined bridge has swept | | | Down the dark stream which seaward creeps. | | | | | On this green bank, by this soft stream, | | | We set to-day a votive stone; | 10 | | That memory may their deed redeem, | | | When, like our sires, our sons are gone. | | | | | Spirit, that made those heroes dare | | | To die, and leave their children free, | | | Bid Time and Nature gently spare | 15 | | The shaft we raise to them and thee. | | |
After living in "Olde Medford Towne" for 15 years, we finally took the kids down to the square on Partriots Day to see Revere's Ride recreated.
There was a very nice ceremony as the school children layed wreaths on the graves of the Revolutionary War dead.
Funny how you often never really notice sights of historic significance - like for instance this graveyard dating back to the 1700's between the CVS and the Dunkin Donuts!
Revere's arrival on horseback was impressive (though rather late - if the Regulars really WERE coming, Mr. Adams and Mr. Hancock would have been in deep trouble!)
He successfully roused the Medford Militia, and we gave him a rousing send-off as he headed off to Lexington.
Next year we'll head up the road with him to see the boys muster on Lexington Green. Or maybe we'll just watch the Marathon or the Sox game...

On one of our very first trips to Medford we took the kids to both Lexington and Concord on the way home. Very moving experience for at least one of us.
