The Judge Report - The Right Stuff

About The Right Stuff

His dad flew bi-planes in World War I and on the county fair barn-storming circuit thereafter. His mom was a wing-walker at those early flight exhibitions. Wally Schirra was born with the Right Stuff already in his genes.

He slipped the surly bonds of earth, put out his hand and touched the face of God earlier today at the age of 84. For boys my age there were no bigger heroes than the seven Mercury astronauts, and time has not diminished their glory.

Schirra, and only Schirra, flew in Mercury, Gemini and Apollo capsules. (Grissom would have, had he not been burned to death on the launch pad. Shepard was grounded during Gemini).

And Wally Schirra remains the only astronaut to date to have smuggled a corned beef sandwich into space.

God speed, and rest in peace.

And now there are two, Carpenter and Glenn, another part of the greatest generation.
